S.E.R.V.E. — The Service OS: How to Design, Price, and Deliver Any Service Like a Managed Service
A practical business manual for service entrepreneurs who want to scale without burning out, using a five-step framework borrowed from enterprise managed-services design.
The Service Trap
Most service entrepreneurs don’t own a business. They own a job that emails them at 11 p.m.
You said yes to “just a quick change,” you quoted an hourly rate instead of an outcome, and now the whole thing runs on your memory instead of a system. That’s not a client problem. That’s a design problem — and it’s fixable the same way enterprise managed-services providers fix it: by running the business on a Service Operating System instead of on goodwill and overtime.
S.E.R.V.E. is that system. Five stages, sector-agnostic — it works whether you sell marketing, consulting, HR, cleaning, or anything billed by the job or the month.
The Framework
S — Scope: Define the Box What you deliver, what you explicitly don’t, and what it costs. Most underpricing and scope creep trace back to a Scope that was never written down. The fix is a Service Catalog: included services, excluded services, limits and metrics — the same document enterprise MSPs use before a single contract gets signed.
E — Engage: Sell the Outcome You don’t win by being the cheapest hour on the table — you lose that fight every time. You win by pitching the result, not the labor, and by qualifying leads before you write a proposal. This is pre-sales discipline: outcome-based pitching and contract terms that protect your margin instead of eroding it.
R — Run: Build the Machine If the business stops when you take a vacation, you don’t have a business — you have a very demanding client called “your own company.” Run is where you standardize delivery: SOPs, resourcing, a tracking system anyone on the team can follow without calling you.
V — Value: Prove the ROI Clients don’t cancel because the work stopped delivering — they cancel because they stopped seeing it. Value is the discipline of proactive proof: monthly reporting and Quarterly Business Reviews that make the ROI visible before the client has to ask.
E — Evolve: Scale Without Friction Growth breaks flat-rate deals — a client that triples in size expects triple the work for the same retainer unless you’ve built a change-control process. Evolve covers re-scoping, upsells, and auditing profitability so the service stack grows with the client instead of quietly eating your margin.
What the Book Is
S.E.R.V.E. — The Service OS draws on 20+ years running enterprise service transitions and managed-services P&L, applied down to the scale of a solo freelancer or a five-person agency. Each chapter pairs a real failure story with a blueprint — templates, checklists, and the exact math — plus a link to a live tool on i-maxim.com (Service Catalog Builder, Engagement Deck, SOP Starter Kit, QBR Template, Service Maturity Audit, Exit Readiness Checklist).
No motivational fluff. No “embrace your worth.” Just the mechanics of turning a service business into a machine that runs without you in the room.
Status: In development. Framework and chapter blueprints are locked; chapters are being drafted next.
